Samba and RH7.2

Hi I have installed samba succesfully (i think). Then I create an simple smb.conf like the one in the samba distribution and I put in the /usr/local/samba/bin. When I test my smb.conf, it gave me me "ERROR: lock directory /usr/cache/samba does not exisit. Btw, when I testparm it loads the smb.conf from /etc/samba/smb.conf instead of /usr/local/samba/bin. Can anyone one help me with these problems.

1. Why I got this message
2. Where Should I put my smb.conf

Thanks in advance.

1) Probably becaues /usr/cache/samba doesn't exist.
2) It depends on the options given at compile time. Try moving them out one at a time - if samba doesn't start with one missing then that is where it should be.

Well as I understand it, if you install samba via rpm then it will use /etc/samba/smb.conf so I'd edit that smb.conf file. Then try testparm again and see if it complains.

Well I didnt installed via rpm. is easier to install via rpm?? if I install again via rpm, will it cause any confusion to the samba program?? if it does what should I do. Thanks

Remove your install and install the RPMs for samba and configure the file /etc/samba/smb.conf. It should work like a charm (somewhat at least :))
