Samba

Hello newbie here again.

Still having problems with samba and it's not due to lack of reading the manual.

Downloaded samba- 3.0.0 and did as the instructions said (http://se.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch02.html). The compiling and installing went as it should. Now my problem is I can't find out if it is installed or not?
Have tried smbd -V but without luck the same with whereis smb.conf
Have searched for smb.conf but can't find it?
The folder it seems to be installed to is /usr/local/samba but there is no smb.conf there but there is the following folders (bin include lib man private sbin swat var).
Now I now I've done something strange or it would be running by now so I ask of you to help me. How do I find out if samba is installed and where is the smb.conf file?
THX

Thx peacedog but no it isn't there. Should I just try to install it again or is there a brighter path for me to take?
