salvaging an old install when its partition # changes

i had debian installed on hdb15 & merged the partitions before it so it became hdb13. (actually i deleted 4 & created 2).

i had googled & saw you can copy an install to a new partition & reconfigure grub & edit fstab to make it work. did that with this & booted to a cmd line cause something was still referencing the old partition.

i rechecked fstab, it was correct & looked at xorg.conf but no references there.

is this possible or is changing its partition # very different from copying to a new partition?

I did something similar in the past with no problems. Try to grep /etc for hdb15. Also, where are you writing the boot loader? If writing to a partition, be sure that partition is tagged as active in fdisk.
