S3 ProSavage DDR Chipset Not Working with SuSE 9.2 Pro
Alright guys I'm fairly new to linux and totally new to SuSE 9.2 Pro so please forgive. I've got an HP zt1000 series laptop with the S3 ProSavageDDR (420, 430) integrated video chipset (Device ID# 8d04). It has a 15" 1400x1050 sxga+ screen. I've got winxp pro on one partition and SuSE 9.2 Pro on the other and the windows install works great. When I select SuSE 9.2 from the Grub bootloader (which shows up as a small window in the middle of my screen), it shows initializing hardware etc, then when it goes into Xwindows, I get nothing but a black screen (on and light, but just plain black). If I hit the power button, the mini window (green and blue with the suse icons and logo as before) pops up again and says shutting down etc etc. I've searched goolgle and these forums ENDLESSLY and have tried sax2 (which when done from init 3 cmd line, get the same black screen) sax2 -l, sax2--vesa and many others and only get a black screen. According to the HCL, my chipset SHOULD be compatible with and supported by SuSE 9.2 Pro......but no luck here in getting any GUI after X starts. I really need some help gettin' this working and would appreciate anything anyone could do to help me. Maybe I need to install the drivers from viaarena.com??? If so, i have no idea how or where they are located (/sbin maybe?) so would need help on how to do that. However if there's an easier way, I'm all for it! Thanks much and hope to hear from you guys soon!
