For that you need wine.

Firstly - do you really need this app? Wine is not a polished end user product. It takes effort to get worklng, and your program may not work in it at all.

Secondly - how valuable is this app to you? If you actually need it, you may consider buying CodeWeavers CrossOver, which is a commercial distro of Wine made easy.

wine

Thank you for your quick response.
I don't know anything about wine but I appreciate you letting me know about it.
What I was trying to do is get some programs going in linux that I have going in windows ME.
These programs should be easy to run, but I can't seem to get them all going at the same time.
I am running them all on winMe before I test them on the web. I have a long way to go.
I decided to change my web sites to managble content via mysql, but I think I'm to damn old!
I am trying to get apache2 mysql php and phpmyadmin on my new rh9 system but am having nothing but trouble.
I would like to know what the commercial version that you mentioned is.
Again, I thank you for your response.
My best to you.

What exact problems did you have with installing the apache2+mysql+php+phpmyadmin packages?

Which exact apps are you trying to use from WinME?
There are many fine programs written for linux to replace the apps you use in windows.

Do you know if your mounted windows partition is set to not allow execution of binaries stored on it?

apps

Hi;
I believe the first time I tried to execute apache2 that it said something about binaries. I didn't try anythig else for I have done alot of playing with them all in winME.
I have tried rpms and .tar.gz with all the packages. Of course mysql doesn't have an rpm that I have found.
The problem I keep having is in compiling each of them. In the first place I don't know what I'm doing, and the second thing is that any information I get off the web doesn't seem to fit the latest versions.
When it says to type in such and such and I do the results are always different from what they say. It says for apache to enter make and yet there is no make in the apache file or in the path. That is just one example. In as much as I have a database assembled in winME with everything working I thought what the heck. I'd just transfer all my stuff over to linux.....................but nothing is easy!
Thanks.

You have checked for the packages on your RedHat cds right? Or that they havent already been installed but you're not using the correct command?

Try ./configure before make, and check you have the development packages installed to give you the make command and compilers, etc.

Why wont you give specific names or details about the windows apps you want to run? No one can help without knowing the problem.

Well these are nothing new to most of the linux community and have probably been posted like a million times before but,

http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/
Will give you options for linux software that will replace whatever you are used to in windows.

http://rpmfind.net/
Is a good place if you have an rpm distro. You have a high chance of getting results from your search. In the search results, it lists a HTML page listing what the selected RPM provides, and what it requires. Remember to pick the RPM for your architecture and quite possibly your distro too. If you have missing dependency errors when you try installing the .rpm, check back to the HTML page of the RPM and it gives you links to RPMs of the apps dependencies.

Nice, eh?

apache ++++

I'm sorry that you missed the data. I can get apache 2 installed when I do a full install off of the rh install discs 1-3. There is not anything else. I have downloaded apache 2 ,mysql, php. and phpmyadmin. I have downloaded instructions from http://www.esensualstudios.com/linux.php the last I tried. It is titled Linux Apache + mod_ssl + php + mod_perl + MySQL + curl, linux i...
I didn't mess with ssl or curl or perl.
I have done everything from the top to the bottom. When I get to ---a quick test--- I get errors....when I get to --enable-track-vars more errors. Errors at make, make install. And when I edit apache conf file just as it says, apache doesn't run anymore. The "Test it" doesn't work either.
What is happening is that I have installed all that I can over the past month and can not get anything working. Looking back, I can not remember what I have done.
But thanks for your help.
If you want a copy of this document, let me know your direct email address and I will attach it for you.
I thank you for taking your time to help me.

What's the errors when trying to install off cd?
Can you start from a clean install without loosing much?

jshearman 07-13-2003 12:27 PM
