Running Windows XP appications remotely and opening their windows on Linux?

Hi All,

Setup:
One linux machine (Debian Lenny) and one Windows XP machine (running freesshd, an SSH server for Windows). I can ssh to the windows machine and get a command-line.

Problem:
Is it possible to remotely start an application on the remote windows XP machine (for example Internet Explorer) but have the window (GUI) forwarded to the local linux machine?.

In linux it's easy with ssh and X11. I don't want full desktop control (like rdesktop) but just the application window.

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Mike,

please have a look at RealVNC. It will forward your desktop to the net. You can use different VNC Clients on linux to have full access on the windows desktop.

With this system it is not possible to start Windows programms like in X11.

I hope it will help to solve your problem.

BTW: you coulde use ssh to safely tunnel your VNC connection to Unix or Windows systems.

Best regards Norbert

Thanks for replying, nidsche and lutusp. Please see my original post:

Nidsche: with realvnc is it possible to forward only the application's window and not the entire desktop?.

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Mike,

sorry I missed the sentence about the desktop ... no it can only forward the Desktop.

Best regards Norbert
