Hi Mike,
please have a look at RealVNC. It will forward your desktop to the net. You can use different VNC Clients on linux to have full access on the windows desktop.
With this system it is not possible to start Windows programms like in X11.
I hope it will help to solve your problem.
BTW: you coulde use ssh to safely tunnel your VNC connection to Unix or Windows systems.
