Running windows programs in Ubuntu

Hi,
1)My Juno email program has a distribution that works with linspire.
Linspire was supposed to be part of Ubuntu, according to a web site I found.
My Juno email program will not work natively with Ubuntu.

What should I download?

2) I am trying to play old games: Master of Orion one and two.
What should I download to help with that?

3) my printer (Canon PDCMA 1500) did not work with the 2000 driver. The 1500 driver has makefile problems. What do I need to do to get this working?

Hello seanearlyaug :)

Things might go more smoothly if you posted a separate thread for each of your questions.

In general, if you need to run Windows programs under Linux you have two alternatives; you can use the Windows environment emulator WINE or you can run real Windows in a virtual machine, for example VirtualBox.

Neither solution is perfect; not all Windows progams run under WINE and the performance of virtual machines is not as good as real hardware, especially regards video -- that might be significant for games.

Best

In addition to WINE, also look at CrossOver (http://codeweavers.com) I'm told by our IT Dept. Linux specialist (yes, we have one!!) that version 8 is quite capable.

For email, however, why bother? There are lots of good native Linux programs

Thank you Charles.

This topic must have come up before.
Can you give me a few URLs, maybe to a FAQ for this?

And do I need to download wine? Should I already have it?

and lastly, Juno, which was the one question I wanted answered if I had to pick one:
/home/sean/Desktop/Link to juno.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: /home/sean/Desktop/Link to juno.exe may be a plain executable, not an archive
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/sean/Desktop/Link to juno.exe or
/home/sean/Desktop/Link to juno.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/sean/Desktop/Link to juno.exe.ZIP, period.

What should I be doing here to correct this?

Sean

See my last post (we were both typing at the same time)

The Codeweavers site has all manner of useful stuff

Hello seanearlyaug :)

People here do like you to try and help yourself before they use their limited time that's best kept for when people get stuck. Better you Google around for a while to educate yourself and then come back. There's lots of information out there on these topics.

Reagards your specific question, what is your version of Linspire and where did you get Juno.exe from?

"do I need to download wine?"
Probably not---it should be available thru the package manager.

Which "technically" downloads it ;)

Hern_28 07-15-2009 02:35 PM

Dosbox.

For Masters of orion II, it works better in dosbox than wine for me.

seanearlyaug 07-15-2009 02:56 PM

Thank you all.
1) Does dosbox work in linux? it has a linux feel to it, specifically the command 'mount' to get to a disk.
will there be problems if I download it and try to run it?

2) what command to unlock this functionality (running using Wine) in Ubuntu?)

Its in the repository. Just search the repository, select it, apply changes, setup if necessary, then use ;)

well, yes and no.....If I am a newcomer, and I am introduced to the package manager, i can live for months in a fairy-tale world where I never have to click on the download button---or even read or write the word. That means--for me--that there are no downloads.

Although she has never done it, I'll bet my spouse could get something with the package manager. But ask her to "download and install"?? forget it!!!

for a more useful bit....

for sean*; When Hern* said "repository", that's the same as using the package manager. It's in your menus--called 'add/remove software" or something similar.

Thank all of you,espcially Pixellany.

I got the Juno package from Juno's website after i signed in.
It is not on the main page, one of the my-account or my-juno pages IIRC.
Juno would give me access to all my archived email files, and it will download all the email to my computer for archiving.

I have used sudo today, got a repostory noticed, and got lots of error messages. I am learning. I could show the error messages if that would help.

Projects: printer (canon ipxma ip 1550) not yet working, dosbox not yet working, lindows not yet working, wine not yet working, games not yet working because of last two, juno not yet working.
I have resolved to load spore on my windows laptop and avoid trouble, as the best recommendation said use a cracked game.
More results when I have time.

From this point, I think it would be good to keep this thread focussed on WINE and/or Crossover. (Fits the title)

By all means tell us the error messages trying to install WINE.

I suggest starting a new thread for the printer issue. Give a summary of what's already been recommended.

BTW: I grew up in Claremont--just a few miles from you. The whole area is hugely different from what it was when I was in high school-----would you believe 50 years ago?

seanearlyaug 07-16-2009 04:56 PM

Slowly i get educated.
I think that I installed Wine 1.1.24 today. The first try was via the command line, and resulted in a huge amount of text. The second was to upgrade through Synaptic.

But when I click on an application, it tries to open it with the installer. I really do not know yet how to check on the installation status of an application.

I will take your advice and put the printer problem on another thread.

I am not sure how to proceed from here.

Sean
