Running system stopped working

Hi,

This is my first post and I am just a beginner in linux. I was wondering if there is a way to install and use MS office in Ubuntu or MX Linux. I know there is office software in linux but as per my informaiotn MS office is far superior to it in terms of functionality and options. I want to use linux as my primary OS but the only hinderance is not being able to use MS office. Please be informed that the online version of ME office could be used but it is very basic and has no advanced features.

Regards

Faisal

Welcome to the forum.

Per your title: What exactly stopped running?

MS Office runs online as you know, or on Windows.

You can run WINE or use a virtual machine to run Windows, but they're not easy to use as a beginner. Really a best option may be to dual boot and use MS Office in Windows only.

Thank you very much. I will try to use Wine and if unsuccessful then will dual boot Windows.

Yesterday I replaced hard disk with SSD and installed Zorin OS. It was working fine when all of a sudden the icons turned to white and disappear. I logged out of GUI and the messages were running on the screen as shown here https://forum.zorin.com/t/running-sy...d-working/4416. I restarted and then it was working fine for few minutes and then again the same thing. I am wondering if there is a problem with the new SSD or installation.

Hi.

The online version is as advanced once you pay for it; that's how you run it, you pay!

Here's a search for microsoft Office, in the LQ's forums: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...rchid=11746634
(if the link doesn't work the search tab is right above us, click on Advanced and search the titles for Microcoughed (whoops microsoft) Office)
...you could also search something like, micro$oft Office Linux in Google and\or DuckDuckGo?

:hattip:

Edits: Oh and if you think the GNU\Linux versions* aren't as good,
(from,,, other people's opinions,:confused::doh:) why don't you help like all future kids will? The corporations will love you for it... :p
Another search example:

Just install LibreOffice, you can do whatever you need with it.

1. While it is possible to get traditional Microsoft Office (MSO) to run under Linux, it runs crippled and poorly.
The newer MSO 365 runs on the web: No install needed, as mentioned above.

2. The native Office software such as LibreOffice Suite (LO) runs better on linux, for some things runs better on Windows, and provides MORE functionality than MSO in most areas. MSO also provides email integration, which is not offered by Linux software. (I consider this an advantage. As a System Administrator the only succesfull ransomware attacks I ever encountered were delivered via email through the MSO Outlook client.)

3. What does any of this have to do with "Running system stopped working"? The subject of the thred is never described in the body of your post. HAve you a system that actually stopped running? If so, I want to know more about that. If not, why use that subject to ask a question about MSO?

You got those exact errors that you showed?

Or perhaps you can post the messages you did see.

Yes might be an install issue, but could be something else.

Looks like your system remounted itself or another partition in read-only mode.
This causes all writes to be rejected.

This is typically a response to serious hardware error.

I would also support the recommendations for LibreOffice. In most metrics, it really is noticeably superior. However, if you are starting out, you should also take a look at the Calligra productivity suite. It is a bit different, but if you are not too set in your ways, you might find it best of the lot.

If you choose to run standalone M$ Office, then you have several barriers. The PlayOnLinux or CrossOver variants of WINE might offer better support for legacy office suites than plain WINE. The situation there is always changing, so you'll have to look around to see what the state is right now.

If you really do feel compelled to run Windows just to have specific productivity software, the best way for that would not be to dual boot but to try VirtualBox or Qemu and run everything within a Virtual Machine. That way you can take a snapshot once you have the guest system working and then roll back to the last-known-good snapshot every time you need to use it and/or when (not if) Windows curdles.

I don't know about that, but I do know that however highly I regard LibreOffice, I would never recommend it to anyone that exchange documents with MS Office users... a 100% compatibility is still not there, which means documents *will* be broken.

Besides that important "detail", there are minor annoyances...
Have a look over at mr. nit-picker himself! :D

As I don't trust dual-booting a work pc, I keep Linux and Windows on two separate discs and choose which one to use before boot, ie only one is live at any time. Only datadrives are common...

I run Windows in Virtualbox and solved lots of problems like Office, Garmin , Canon drivers ...
I rarely use Office , Libre or not (still stick with 2007).
If any of you can find linux driver for a Canonscan 5600F, a beer is on me.
Actually I use Virtualbox as an added layer of security more than anything else, at the expense of reduced performance.

I only run Linux in a VM in Linux but everything else is opinions.

While I do study reviews and more so on hardware, I never trust them until I form my own opinions. ;)

SOME documents might be somewhat broken. Saying they *will* be broken is a lot over the edge since it implies every time, and that certainly is not the case.

So far I have never encountered a document in docx format that had an issue when imported to LO, but I never deal with the really outlying format cases either. Most of the users I deal with are standard users and do not do the really extreme formatting.

I made my living writing training materials (user guides, workbooks, instructors guides) for many years, the last decade or so using MSWord.

LibreOffice can do pretty much everything Word can do. The functions may be hidden in different places on the menu, but, with very few exceptions, it's there.

As for compatibility, I've found that you can save an document composes on LO to various Word *.doc formats. If the formatting iw relative simple, compatibility is not an issue. The more complex the formatting (text boxes, columns, etc.), the greater the chance of compatibility issues when "saving as [Word format]."

That's just my personal experience, and I must note that I have not had to use word processors much the fast few years, but a web search for "libreoffice msword compare" will turn up a number of reviews and comparisons.

Yes I think so.
There was a time-out in disk I/O, and the driver for the ext4 filesystem went to read-only.
You must reboot to recover.

Check your disk with command
Code:

lsblk
Assuming your disk is sda,
you can see the current timeout with command
Code:

cat /sys/block/sda/device/timeout
This might require root rights, then try with sudo
Code:

sudo cat /sys/block/sda/device/timeout
You can even tune it (in a root shell):
Code:

sudo bash
echo 90 > /sys/block/sda/device/timeout
exit

But this is a mitigation.
A real fix would be a kernel- and/or driver-patch.
Or change the disk, preferably to another model.
