Running Programs Linpus Lite

wonder if you can help?
because i think i'm missing a huge part of the picture here!..lol
i am completely new to Linux, i have an Acer Aspire a150 running linpus lite.
So i thought i would download the linux version of realplayer....no problem
everything wen't according to plan..it asked for my password and proceeded to install realplayer.
i thought marvelous, here i go no problems..i can't find the realplayer icon?i don't even know where to look to see if its installed ok...don't laugh :)
And this is where i think i have gone wrong...do i have to download a program like wine? first then these programs will run ok.

Regards

Mike

In Linux it is not the same as in Windows to install and or remove any programs. There is a package manager which may be called; Add Remove programs, and you first set it up by selecting software sources, which are the servers that have Linux software available. Then when you open up your Package Manager you can choose what to install from either a search, or by section types.

Firstly, you don't need WINE if you're installing Linux software. You use WINE to run Windows software under Linux.

You said you did go through the installation process for Real Player. This may not have created any icons, just installed the software to a specific directory. It should have told you which directory it was using for installation, so you can go and create an icon yourself and specify where the executable is located.

If you don't remember where it was installed, then if Linpus has a tool to find files, you're looking for "realplay". If you have access to a terminal, then run "locate realplay" or "which realplay" and that should tell you where to find it. Post the results here if you're unsure of anything.

HTH.

Take a look at this article about tweaking your aspire's linpus lite: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/09...pire_one_tips/
you'll need to enable the advanced menu (page 2). There are also more tricks in there and there's also a way to put realplayer in the linpus desktop shortcuts (read "6. Add desktop icons").
