running programs independant to the virtual console

'lo

i've really been wondering lately... just how do u run programs independant of the virtual consoles... problem is that when i start a program in the console such as konqueror , mozilla or xmms it runs fine.. i know how to background it and all.. but when i close the console all the programs close along with it...

Bottom line is:
How do u run the programs from the console so that when u close it the programs wont close with it...

ta inadvance

if i know what you're taking about, i think it depends on which window manager you're using (like blackbox, kde, or gnome). if you use kde (or maybe i'm thinking of gnome but they probably both have one) there's a dialog similar to the MS-Windows "Start --> Run" (you know, you click the little button that says start... unless you switched to linux from the mac, in which case i don't know why you switched. OS X Jag is Unix based and Panther is coming out. and the G5 looks pretty sweet.). i use fluxbox and there's something similar there too but i don't ever use it because i'm a CLI-kinda-guy (even when i use X i have a whole mess of xterms running.). so maybe i answered your question... maybe i didn't... maybe i'm wrong on everything i said. write again if that wasn't it, i'll check back and probably some other people too.

well, someone has written a better answer as i was writing my erroneous and overly lengthy one. oh well.
