RPMs problems

I seem to be having problems installing RPM's.
I have just started with Linux RedHat7.3.
I have downloaded about a dozen RPM,s for DivX, AVI, a couple of games (Quake) and the Enlightenment desktop.
Every single one failed to install. Either I get a "needs dependant files" message (where do I find them?) or the GnoRPM interface just sits and looks at me and won't do anything at all.
I have tried wherever possible to go for i686 versions (to match my machine) and have tried also to stick to RedHat "labelled versions".
What am I doing wrong?

...my brain hurts!

this might help you

Hello dear,
This is the second person within two days who are in the same position i was in few months back.

When you get an dependency error then it means that to run that software following this are required. and once those things are installed then normally you don't get errors

Only one thing helps is your Patience

mayankjohri 11-20-2002 03:42 AM

for your second questions, From where you can get then

http://rpmfind.net is the right place to start your search

OK
I got loads of stuff from RPMFind.net.
And none of them worked.

Also,
what do I do to rectify the following problem...

"no acceptable C compiler found in $Path" ????

This isn't a steep learning curve, it's a vertical climb!

I am proabably the least cometant person to reply, but I will give my opinion; I suspect you do not have a C compiler. When you installed, what options did you choose......kernel hacking, programming, etc - it may be that you need a compiler. I think RPMs are a structured form of a basic source file, so need a compiler, and *NIX is almost always a in C. Some distros don't tell you that it is very useful (like DO IT) to install a compiler...

WARNING - NEWBIE advice - may be totally wrong!

Hi, some rpms might need a newer version of you gcc compiler.
It could be also that you need a newer version of the rpm application itself. Try to install something simple, say, a newer version of emacs, and see if it works.

I got hold of a xine rpm and it installed!!!!!
Hooray!
Only problem is I cant seem to get anything to play on it.

Further on than I was yesterday.
Daunted but ongoing!
