RPM Install Problem

I am running SuSE Linux 9.1 Personal. I would like to install Firefox 1.0, which I found online as an RPM. The installation CD includes an older version, but I would like to install the new version.

Here's the problem: When I try to install the new version of Firefox, YaST tries to install the older CD version from CD1. How do I change this behavior?

Hi,
I don't know exactly how YaST works, but it might be a source rpm directory specification problem. Try to specify rpm location. Or you may try to install rpm manually, typing: rpm -hiv 'rpm_name'

Try to install the new version from command line with rpm -Uhv <package>

EDIT: U is for update, i is for install. See man rpm for details.

Thank you!

I will read "man rpm", and then try to install Firefox manually with the command line, although I am unfamiliar with Linux command lines.

I will keep you informed as to my progress.

Although Linux becomes more and more '(windows) user friendly', the command-line basics are good to know. But you could try the installation again from the GUI: simply click (once) on your downloaded rpm. After that, new buttons should appear in konqueror, like 'Install package with Yast'. Clicking this button should work...

try rpm -Uvh --test <package name>

I couldn't seem to find "man rpm".

After moving the Firefox RPM to my personal folder, I used Konsole to type the following at the command line:

rpm -Uhv MozillaFirefox-1.0-2.1.src.rpm

Here's the result:

1 :MozillaFirefox ############# [100%]

What happened here?

abisko00 01-20-2005 08:51 AM

We've had that in a similar post: restart your GUI, then there should be an icon in the menu. To start firefox, you may need to run it as root the first time. Typing 'kdesu firefox' on konsole should do it.

man rpm is a command that you can run on command line. It opens a help page, where all the functions of the command rpm are described. I doubt that you don't have it ;)

Mozilla firefox has been upgraded.
try rpm -qa | grep <package name> and it should confirm that the package is indeed the correct version!
There are lots of rpm sites, http://www.rpm.org/ for one.

I typed "man rpm" at the command line, and it's all there. Can I read it as a text file somewhere?

I will reboot and look for the Firefox icon.

do a simple
man rpm > manpage.txt
at the console ;-)

Open up Konqueror and in the location bar I think if u type man:// it should give u a list of the man pages viewable via konqueror web interace

You can use the SuSE-Help system to view and search man pages. But you may need to tick the field under 'Search' first. There are also collections in the web (sorry, no link right now).

EDIT: Wow, didn't know about james's solution

Note the src in the package name, this indicates it is source code, not the installable binary. I would recommend looking for a binary version to install.

I rebooted and could not find a Firefox icon in the menu. Then I typed 'kdesu firefox' as root in Konsole, and nothing seemed to happen. I still can't find an icon for Firefox.

Now what?
