also, I am having problems with YOU updating my Nvidia drivers. Anybody know of a better way of doing this? I have been to the ftp SuSE site that describes how to do it, but I can't get it to work. It just crashes the kernel and stops after attempting to execute startx.

You could also try checkinstall. Or, look for tarballs which include an rpm spec file in the tar archive and use rpm to build a binary following that spec.
