rootfs and etab

Hi

My 2.6 kernel gets stuck when it tries to mount the rootfs -- i want to mount it via NFS..
I have a basic question: when the kernel is built, should the rootfs also be built and stored somewhere? -- if yes then what is the name of this folder/file?

Also, on my server when i try to start the nfsd daemon, i get the following msg:

Quote:
Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...exportfs: could not open /var/lib/ nfs/etab for locking
exportfs: can't lock /var/lib/nfs/etab for writing
Do I need to modify the entries in the /var/lib/nfs/etab file?

Thanks,
Ashlesha.
