root@darkstar:~$

Hey, I just installed Slackware Linux 10.0 on my laptop(IBM Thinkpad 600x for those who like to keep track of compatibility).

My question is pretty simple. I get root@darkstar~$ as my prompt and i am wondering what signifigance the @darkstar part has and if i can change that.

Cheers!

root means your loged in as root, and darkstar is the name of your machine.
and the @ means AT... like, Chris@Home. or Fun@TheBeach lol...

anyways... you can change the hostname in /etc/hosts
the format is self explanitory.

darkstar is the name of patrik volkerding's computer domain or some such thing like that.

i have heard slackware referred to as a copy of patrik volkerding's hard drive (i.e. not a real distro)

Run this command as root: updatedb
this will update your database.
Type this command:man hostname
to find out how to change your hostname.
Type this command after updatedb: locate hostname
to find out were hostname is located.

There is only one 'hosts'. You need to edit 'hosts' to change the computer name. there are toher files that have 'hosts' in the name, but you want to edit 'hosts'.

/me coughs ... "Excuse me guys, but that's /etc/HOSTNAME, not /etc/hosts"

Cheers,
