root password doesnt work

i reinstalled slacware 8.1

i did configure a root password during installation process

an it appear something like this

"welcome to linux 2.4.1"

"darkstar login: (does it needs an special login?)
"password:" (i do write the password configured and it doesnt work)

what is a root password?

do i need to configure it?
what happens if i donīt

thank you for reply... as you see i am a newbie.....

I dont know what your root password is. Yes you do need to configure it as you wont be able to do stuff on it if you cant log into root(superuser) that includes installing packages etc. You could reinstall linux it and set the password again--right? Also, about slackware- you have chosen a hard distro...good luck

The loging should be "root" and the password should be waht you set during the install.

After login as "root" you better add a "normal user" so you can work daily and just use "root" if you have to.
