Unhappy Root password and keyboard

Hello,

I just installed an older version of Linux which I have used before. When I installed, I set up an administrator password but after the installation, I wanted to access my keyboard settings and realized that the numbers on the keyboard or my laptop were working. This means that I cannot enter my admin password.

My keyboard is not the problem as it was working before the installation. The numbers at the top of keyboard do not work or the numbers to the side but I did not check the num-lock. I will do that after work.

I was wondering if I need to do something with the setup.

thanks,

If this made more sense might be able to help a bit better, however please don't tell me this is just a case of hitting the "num lock" button.

if it is an OLD version of SOME linux distro ( you did not say WHAT IT IS ) and a NEW laptop then the OLD nix most likely dose not support the new laptop.
