Hi,

welocome to LQ. To become root in a terminal, you can use the "switch user" command, "su". Eg.
Code:
su -l

You will need the root password. If you were not asked to set one when you installed your system you are using a distribution which uses sudo. If this is the case, rather than typing su

type: sudo command
It will ask your for a password which will be your password, not the root password.

opensuse12.1 and SELD 11

do something very odd with the root account and install

it defaults to YOUR NORMAL user password
-- very bad idea on novells part--

that is UNLESS you unchecked the already checked "check box"
to set a different root password

so it might be your normal account password that is ALSO the root account password
