root directory running low on space

my root directory is at 98%... it was at 88% this morning, and not much is running on the weekends... this is a backup server running a dataguard oracles standby db. the os is oel 5.8 64bit.... need some help in trying to figure out what files are consuming space....
the root directory is 500gb ??

The most straight forward way is

Code:
du -sx /* | sort -n
Then just keep tracing it through until you find which subdirectory(ies) is/are consuming all of your space.

Check your /var directory
