root can mount usb thumb drive but nobody else. why?
 

When I'm logged in as "root" and insert my thumb drive it is automatically recognized. This doesn't work for other users. Why? How do I fix it. Same thing happens for the CD drive. It has to be mounted by root. How do I change this behavior? I'm using CentOS 5.

Unfortunately, the problem could be one of a number of different things, and I don't have a CentOS 5 system to work along with you on.

SUGGESTION:
1. Please look at this thread:

a) mounting the device manually
b) <Right-click>, Properties, Automount= Y

Mystery Solved (sort of)
 

Use of the usb drive and cd rom only works for locally connected users apparently. I've been logging into my Linux box remotely from my Windows PC using an Xserver (Xming). Even though my Linux box is sitting by my desk I log into it remotely from my Windows box to avoid having two terminals/keyboards/mouses on my desk. Obviously this won't work because CentOS (Redhat) obviously only permits local devices to be used by locally connected users. It must have some way to detect remote connections. Guess I'll have to modify my plan.
