Root
Hi it's me again you guys are probably sick of me
As I mentioned before I got hacked so here is my question: My system say's "Unknown user id: root" when I try to su, so I know root has been deleted How can I restore root? -------------------------------------------Rye |
have you tried: "boot single" at the lilo prompt, and doing passwd root to change root password? Have you checked your /etc/passwd file to see if there is still a entry for root?
|
sorry it's linux single
these might help: http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/edcert/sessio...oot_linux.html http://docs.rinet.ru:8083/Slackware-....htm#Heading21 |
please just post the same problem to a single thread - it makes it much easier to find a solution if the information isn't spread across several threads.
|
Is this likley to be an attempt at cracking his box? Besides to be malicious, I assume there is no point to deleting, or making the user root in-accessible.
How would this be possible anyway? (not from a crackers point of view, but the genuine user) Is it possible that it's a configuration error, or a partition not being mounted on boot or something?? You're welcome to ignore me here, I'm just curious! glj |
it's possible to delete the root user by changing the user files in the /etc directory. that could be what happened.
