have you tried: "boot single" at the lilo prompt, and doing passwd root to change root password? Have you checked your /etc/passwd file to see if there is still a entry for root?

please just post the same problem to a single thread - it makes it much easier to find a solution if the information isn't spread across several threads.

Is this likley to be an attempt at cracking his box? Besides to be malicious, I assume there is no point to deleting, or making the user root in-accessible.
How would this be possible anyway? (not from a crackers point of view, but the genuine user) Is it possible that it's a configuration error, or a partition not being mounted on boot or something??

You're welcome to ignore me here, I'm just curious!

it's possible to delete the root user by changing the user files in the /etc directory. that could be what happened.
