Ripping VCD's ( I/O ERROR while copying )

Hi,

I am using Fedora Core1

Now whenever i try to copy any VCD I get an I/O error. I figured out that i can't copy the VCD's directly but have to rip them somehow.

i.e. the complete scenario is. I have a VCD which is in my CDROM

The CD contains folders :
cdda cdi ext karaoke mpegav segment vcd

The mpegav folder contains a file music01.dat which is the actual movie file which i want
Whenever I right click on the movie file and select copy and paste it in my hardisk nautilus says :
ERROR "I/O error" while copying "/mnt/cdrom/mpegav/music01.dat"

I can copy all data CD's but the problem is only with VCD's. So I guessI have to rip the mpegs off the VCD.I searched for this on the net for a while and found that I could use VCDIMAGER so I downloaded VCDIMAGER for FedoraCore1 : vcdimager-0.7.14-4.1.fc1.fr.i386
but couldn't get it to work.

I can however play the CD with mplayer :
Code:

[koodoo@localhost koodoo]$ mplayer vcd://
and also with xine but i don't know how to rip them

Somebody please help.

Thanks in anticipation.

Try DVDrip, it will do vcd's as well. Works fine for me :-)

what program are you using to rip?

try it as root (ie invoke the program from the command line as su - eg. # xcdroast) to make sure it's not just a permission problem

Hi,

I am not using any program. I just tried to copy it and that didn't work.
Then I downloaded VCDIMAGER but couldn't figure out how to use it.

Also {BBI}Nexus{BBI} suggested to use DVDrip. I don't have it as of yet, but will download and try to use it.

Can't VCDIMAGER be used for this?. If anyone knows how to use it please help
Thanx again.

Did you try reading the documentation here: http://www.vcdimager.org/ also there's this: http://www.vcdimager.org/pub/vcdimag...7/vcdxrip.html

Hi,

Thanx a lot {BBI}Nexus{BBI}
I had already tried reading the first documentation but couldn't make much from it

However the second one was excellent. At present i have already ripped 3/4 th of a VCD

Thanx a lot again. You've helped a great deal

i get the same error, and I can't install vcdimage or dvdrip

any other suggestions on the I/O error? different file system?

Hi,

What I know is that the files in a video C.D. are not in the same format as that in a data C.D. they are in the form of tracks such that the VCD player can understand and play them. To make them compatible to P.C's folders are created (these are those we see as mpeg, karakoe etc) now since these C.D's are not data CD's so we cannot copy them directly. If we try to do this the operating system reports an error (I/O error) because it does not understand the format of these VCD's. To copy the contents of the C.D. we have to rip them and that requires some program like dvdrip or VCDIMAGER. I don't think there is any other way.

However if you cannot install VCDIMAGER or DVDRIP you can still watch them with mplayer and xine.
You can either use the gui buttons (VCD) to play these or type in a terminal :

mplayer vcd://<track no.>

There are some players also (though I don't know any particular one) that help you in ripping VCD's, in addition to playing them.

One may argue that in windows we could simply right click and copy then paste and it would work. But the windows O.S. recognizes these VCD's and then internally calls some ripping program to rip the mpegs off them.

Hope that helps.

mplayer vcd://1 -dumpstream -dumpfile title1.mpg
