Angry Ricoh C3000 will not print with emulation 5e

I've set up a Ricoh C3000 using a generic 5e driver as per its emulation. The data light comes on but it displays an error message You do not have priviledge for this function. Users printing locally to the printer must change their printer settings to black and white each time they print and then printing is successful.

In Linux RHEL 4 it creates a /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops for the print job. I've changed the driver options on the print resolution to 300 dpi grayscale black cartridge but this doesn't help.

Any ideas?
