Rhel3 nis rhel4 client

I am running a RHEL3 server and rebuilt a machine and am trying to authenticate through NIS server. I can ssh out of the machine, ping it using DNS from other machines etc... but I can only log in with a local account. Is there any trick to using a RHEL4 client, or am I missing something really simple?

I found out the problem with some help from miedward. It was really two problems. The authentication was looking for the resolved hostname rather than the server ip. The ssh was a rogue firewall issue, which I turned off. Machine now authenticates and ssh works fine.
