RHEL 6.2 user management problem

Hello Linux gurus. I am having a very strange user management issue on one of my servers. Whenever I attempt to remove one user in particular using userdel I get a message that the user cannot be removed from /etc/passwd. I have tried both -r and -f operands as well with userdel.

When I check the /etc/passwd file I do not see an entry for the user. Now the strangeness begins because when I attempt to add the same username using useradd I get a message that the user exists. I have already checked /etc/group and /etc/shadow and there is no entry associated with the user.

When I run a id [username] I can see a uid, gid and groups associated with the username which indicates to me it is configured somewhere.

This is the first time I have run into this issue and it seems to only be affect this one account in particular. How can I rid myself of this stubborn account? Oh this server is running RHEL 6.2 if that pertinent. Thanks.
