RHEL 4.0 failed to start after upgraded RAM 1G

Upgrade 512MB to 1GB, RHEL 4.0 AS boot failure.
Add mem=512M to "kernel" it starting OK.

What exactly fails? Does it freeze or is there some sort of error message printed out? We need more information to be able to help you.

My system is Redhat AS 4.0 2.6.9-5 EL

If the memory size large than 512MB, the system will stop at:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
