Hi, I have installed RHE Server 6.1 onto a VMWare workstation 8 and it doesn't seem to have networking and/or internet capabilities. Where and what should I check?

Check to see if you have an ip address

Then I would ping my localhost to see if the TCP/IP stack is working

The loopback 'ping 127.0.0.1' worked, however don't seem to have ip address. What should I check next? Thanks

Recent releases of Redhat install with networking disabled. Don't know why. If you installed a gui, right click on the network icon in the notification area and Edit Connections. Your primary connection is probably eht0. Highlight it and Edit. Check the box [X] Connect automatically.

Without the gui... try (as root) ifup eth0. Then ifconfig to check for success. Not sure where/how the automatic start configuration is saved. But if you get connected manually then you have a clue where to search. If I come across something I will reply again.

Eh, to set up the network from the beginning -- just add:

to the boot options of RHEL, Centos, or Scientific Linux.

Although the OP hasn't posted the output of "ip addr" ...so he MAY have an ip address...but still can't connect
