RH9 + VMware tools = no go

Guys, I need some help on this one.

I have managed to work out most of the kinks so far (mouse wheel, dhcp address, RHN updates, etc...) but I cant figure out how to install the vmware tools.

Im running VM4 and have RH9 as the guest. I tried reading through the threads I found on the topic and I also read through the VM manual but Im a total noob and obviously dont have a clue.

Heres the deal: it says to run in text mode but when I do a crtl+alt+backspace RH drops me out to the login prompt but does not start in text mode. I also tried typing in "init 3" in a terminal but it had the same effect, RH restarts and takes me back to the login prompt.

Even if I got it to start in text mode Im going to have issues on the command line unpacking the software and mounting drives 'cause I dont know what the hell Im doing yet... haha.

Please help me out and point me somewhere to get some detailed instructions or jot something down for me to follow.

Thanks in advance to any replies.

TTT - anyone??

Im still stuck on this. I got RH to boot in to text mode and managed to get the vmware tools package to run but its giving me errors when compiling the kernal. I need to get a C compiler installed apparently... has anyone been through this?

Yeah, just about everyone ;) I am actually thinking of writing up a tutorial on that for this forum, it's a common problem. Anyway...

Open up your RPM tool (whatever you use, maybe it's kpackage? Whatever you use to install your RPM software) and check all the boxes in the development section, if that doesn't exist, get this:
GCC (anything with those letters in it really)
And anything it says it will require to satisfy the dependency (trust me, there'll be A LOT).

Cool

update to my issue:

I went back in to RH in GUI mode and tried to install the development package off the RH install CD's that would include a compiler but I get this error:

Packages Not Found
krb5-libs = 1.2.7-10 required by: krb5-devel
openssl = 0.9.7a-2 required by: openssl-devel

The installation will not continue without these pacakges. Why wont it install the development packages off the CD's?

I boot in to Gnome and mount the RH install CD. I check off the Development tools packages so that it would install a C compiler. When I click forward it goes through and reads the package dependancies but errors out and gives the above error.

I opened the detailed view of the packages and made sure to check off everything in there. I also looked at all the other packages and dont see anything titled krb5-libs or openssl

thanks for the help
