rh9 to fc3 upgrade no usb AAARRGH

I just upgraded my fully working rh9 to fedore core 3.
My original boot was LILO and it is now grub.
At first I had kernal panic: no init found and it would not boot.
which I cured by using the linux rescue and doing grub install hda and it booted fine.(I am a novice and have no idea why this worked, but would guess that the original upgrade to grub did not point to hda so reinstalling cured this)

My problem now is no usb which is stopping my adsl modem.
I have done lsmod and
usbcore
usb-storage
usb-hci
aint there, which i needed for my speedtouch modem and usb devices.

How do I get the modules to load in fc3 ?
Is it still something to do with grub ?
Am I missing something obvious ?
Is there something better in the fedora core 3 ?

thanks Roy

insmod (for insert module) followed by module name.

even better is modprobe which loads any other dependencies automatically,

Have you tried messing about with these?

Yes tried both of them.

It seems from what I have read that I will have to recompile the kernel with usbcore etc.
Just wondered if there was something simple I could do.

thanks Roy
