RH9 shutting computer down by itself

hello!
leaving the computer on, i came back and realised that my computer had shut itself down. so i restarted it, and went through and "checked and fixed" errors that were on my pc (stuff didn't unmount) (i think).. anyway, i thought this was weird but again left my computer, came back about 20minutes later to see the screen saver on, i decided it was all going to be ok this time, but i came back around 5-10minutes later and it had turned of... it doesn't "shut down" because it doesn't unmount. it just turns my pc off... any way this could be fixed? anything anyone could suggest? this is my second day of linux, so i'm pretty stuck, i've gone through most of the confs in gnome and can't find any settings "turn my computer off if it doesn't look like i'm comming back in the next 30minutes"

any help would be appreciated!

ps. i also posted this in software (sorry i didn't mean to put it there)
please respond in this thread only

Wasn't just a mini brownout? (milliseconds I mean) I had this "rural power problem".

(checking the video clock isn't a good indicator - less sensitive and battery backup. Houselights should flicker though).

Not on a *nix box at the moment, but try "man apmd".

i don't think it was a power surge.. i was watching tv.. and i have surge protectors (it would of flicked the switch and i would have manually switched it back to active) but i will do some reading thanks

i find my redhat is quite interesting in the way that it will half shutdown the pc, and just leave the psu poweded on. this happens when i push my power switch momentarily and when i leave it un-used for a long time.

flick the mouse, wait a lil while and if it dont start up, push your power switch momentarily and it should start back up again.
dont hold the button down as this will shutdown the pc altogether. if you have set your power switch to turn off the machine completely in one go, change it in the bios.

to start it again, i have to hit the power switch, i thought it might have been sleeping, but all the led's were off, on all devices (tower, keyboard, monitor). when i pressed the power switch it booted my computer (cold boot) so it isn't sleeping, its actually turning off.. :(
i thought linux was unbreakable?

perhaps theres just some tiny settings somewhere you need to change. happens to everyone.
like i said, go into your bios and change the power off button timing so that you have to hold the button for a little while to turn it off completely (that is if youre on an atx..)

yeah and all the led's would be off if it is in a power down mode... thats what it does... shuts off your lights, hard drive, all other power things. then boots when you tell it to wake up.

i dont know what else to suggest. sorry.

don't apologise! you've given me something to work with! thanks for your help! :) i'll keep playing around in gnome maybe i'll find some weird setting! and i'll jump into bios on next boot and see about changing the option!
