RH9 doesn't recodnise my DVD rom

hi
i have a dvd and i don't know how to configure linux
so it sees it as a dvd rom
it looks at it as a regular cd-rom
i have libdvdcss installed
i have mplayer and it doesn't play my dvd because it thinks its a cd
in my fstab it looks like this
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
cdrom is my dvd rom
and cdrom1 is my cdrw
plese tell me what i need to do
thanks

fstab has nothing to do with mplayer. mplayer defaults to looking for your dvd device as /dev/dvd. open up a shell terminal and use these commands:

1. su
<enter root password>
2. ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd

run mplayer. as a note, you do not ever need to mount your dvd drive in order to play a dvd in mplayer or xine. all xine skins have a dvd button that you click on. there's one mplayer skin that has this, but for the others, you can right click on mplayer and choose DVD > Open Disc

su into root and use hdparm.

ie. as root:

/sbin/hdparm -v /dev/hdX

where X is the letter for your dvd/cdrom drive.

so for me, my dvd player is on /dev/hdc:

/sbin/hdparm -v /dev/hdc

the output will show something like enable dma: on or 1 or something like that.

to enable dma use the -d1 option.

/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc
