RH8.0, system lag

hi, im not sure if this is normal or not, but i get terrible lag when using KDE. I click on anything or run anything in the console, eg mozilla, text editor or anything, and it takes about 20seconds to open.
my computer is:
AMD AthlonXP 2000+
512MB DDR SDRAM
80GB 7200RPM HD (50/50 partition)
GeForce4 MX440 64MB AGP

so i cant see my computer being too slow :\.
any ideas as to what it could be, or is KDE always like this?

many thanks,

Charlie

I would suspect auto-mounting devices as default of RH8 and MDK9. Awfully long on my friend's box also. I fiddled with his /etc/fstab and it speeded up.

Yeah, there's an automount process that runs on some boxes but not others when you start X in a vanilla RH 8.0 install.

I've never had a serious problem with it, though. It usually seems to die after about 10 seconds. I would also like to kill it if anyone has a quick suggestion.

Thanx
