RH Linux 9.1 on an external HDD

Hello,

I have a Compaq desktop running WinXP. I've always had the interests of having a Linux system, so I attempted to install RH Linux 9.1 on a 2.5" Toshiba external HDD (40GB, NTFS formatted). The 2.5" (laptop sized) HDD is connected to the Compaq via a USB cable. I am able to see this external HDD in BIOS and set it with higher boot-up priority.

After putting in the Linux installation CD in the CD-ROM and rebooting my system, the installer seems running well. However, it can only find the internal HDD (Samsung, 160GB) on my Compaq (/dev/hda), and there is no option for me to change the destination location (unless I'm blind that I did not see it).

I speculated that Linux does not support an external USB HDD during its installation (not sure if this is ture as I'm a beginner of Linux), so I did a test: Instead of installing Linux, I tried to install WinXP on the external HDD, WinXP picked it up easily and I was offered the option: On which one of the hard drives I want to install WinXP.

If there is a straight forward ways of installing RH Linux on this 2.5" external HDD, would someone please provide me some tips/helps on this issue? I'd really appreciate it!

Tony

I remember the last Redhat release being Redhat 9.0, so I dont know where you got 9.1. Anyway Redhat Linux 9 and below are now obsolete unsupported distributions so try a newer release like Fedora Core 4.
