RH 8.0 black screen
 

I have installed RH 8.0 on my computer, that worked perfectly well... but when I try to boot LINUX.... i can see the initial RH bootscreen but after that a get a "black screen" ... any ideas about what can have gone wrong??

Just guessing, but it sounds like the bootloader has not operated fully. What I mean is that it has started (so you got the boot screen) but hasn't then fired off vmlinuz with the right parameters. Which bootloader are you using (GRUB? LILO?) and what exactly does the boot screen show - for instance does it show any options?

As a quckfix try, if you created a boot floppy, try that.

It´s GRUB

I didnt do the floppy (I don´t know if I would know how to use it anyway)

I get the screen where it stands Grub version 0.92, after a few seconds the boot process seems to start, but then the screen turns absolutely black...

Confession time - I am very inexperienced with Linux - BUT I'll give you my thoughts anyway...

I think somehow the bootloader is starting without necessary parameters - stuff like where to find the linux boot program. Using either Grub or Lilo means the master boot record can pick what to load, so it can offer a choice. In my case, with a couple of up2date sourced kernal upgrades, that means I get a list of possible boot options from Lilo (sorry, I haven't used Grub). These must reqire basice parameters - like which one to use and where to find it. I suspect this information is missing.

If you had a boot floppy, the process is simple ( if you you know this is so, and how to do it!). You set the BIOS to load from floppy, if it doesn;t check this already, put the floppy in, switch machine on. You can still encounter problems, and these can be just as, or more, obscure than the original problem, but it is another, usually effective option. I would recommend creating boot floppies on install, but my experience is limited.

Back to the main problrm - something is not using the boot options for vmlinuz, or they were not originally set. I'm not sure how to approach this. My best suggestion is one that implies total failure from me -

Repost the question, with anything you can use from my suggestions. This forum will almost always respond to a question with zero answers, so my unsuccessful answers may have put people off. The knowledge and skill lwevel of the forum is relatively high.
