Revodrive + RAID 0 having problems Dual booting
 

As the name suggests i'm trying to set up a dual raid 0 dualbooting system :) i have about 70Gibs of data i can not loose but if it's possible to move it around during the installations i'll do it.. so the problem:
i isntalled Windows 7 on the first partition on the revodrive (120Gib) and after that moved the files there from my other 2 WD FAEX non raid discs then at the reboot made em RAID 0 and started installing linux (ubuntu 10.10) but when it was time to determine the place to install it didn't show the bios raid at all i thought whatever i could deal with it later and continued but after the install was finished :
1.No Grub is showing up directly booting into the newest upgrade of ubuntu
2.As you can imagine i cant go into Win 7 as well
3. after i installed kubuntu and KDE boot my mouse and wifi doesn't start imediately it takes about 5 min to ask me for my pass and start KDE daemon (if i'm not mistaken) and after i press enter with the pass it kick me out (but the mouse and wifi works now) and i need to login again)

so what i'm asking is can some1 help my set up my system :/ :) please and thank you :) (running intel i7 980x on Gigabyte x58a-ud7)

(revodrive + disc specs : 1x 240 Gb revodrive + 2x WD Faex (2x1TB))

i found a way to mount the windows partition on the revodrive so i can see the files and copy em
also i suspect the grub is on 1 of the Sata drives cause it shows it's doing something dual booting (the led for hdd usage is blinking a lot)

I assume this revodrive is bootable and that your motherboard supports booting from pci-e and that the OS can support booting from pci-e also.

I assume you mean that you tried to install an os and now it isn't booting from grub. So then you either have to fix grub or use windows loader to chain off to linux. Your choice as to which way to go.

I can't imagine how a ssd could take 5 minutes to finish anything. So, I'd guess either there is some scripts working to test or check that finally fail or you really have some hardware or install issues. Does it take that long on live cd?

well at first i installed Win 7 and it booted from the RD i installed ubuntu and probably there was no GRUB installed at all since there were only 2 RAID 0 avalivable at the moment. While w8 for response i took my time and backed up my data so now i can do a totally clean install. I was going to read about dual booting on raid 0 just now :). I read i'll need raid 1 for the grub and i can't figure how to make it only 1mb partition (ICHR10R) and i expect to get something like Revodrive : 120x115x5 GB (Win7 x Ubuntu10.10 / x linSwap) + 2x WD FAEX : RAID1 Grub (1-2 mb) + RAID0(3 partitions 2x750+500 respectively)
any suggestions how do that are welcome and thanks for the response :)

Raid as in software, faux or real hardware. If real hardware (and the only way in my opinion) then make that in the raid bios. Then most OS's will see it if they have the drivers for the raid. Anything else gets kind of weird. Some distro's can see other software raid but faux raid cards are goofy and I simply hate them. Never know from one distro to another what may show up.

The general rule is install windows then linux. YOu have to take note of any grub or other loader issues that relate to the distro. If in doubt you may have to put the loader on the or near the OS and chain load it. It may be that is what happened.


Since this seems to be a pretty good setup, why not run a virtual machine on it or maybe a esxi if it is fully supported?

Virtualizing would be nut i still like chainloading better about the MoBo RAID i cant make a RAID1 less than a 1Gb wich is way too much for a GRUB but if nothing helps i guess i'm gonna do that

this esxi thing doesn't looks like it could virtualize OS tho

Win goes first is what i tried as well but after it didn't succeed i read about that and for RAID systems they suggest w goes 2nd and then recover GRUB which was too complicated for me so i closed the article and i cant find it now :/


still i'd like to do it the way i want it to be just need some1 to guide me through it :) the Intel storage matrix (which i'm using is said to be able to run RAID 0 and RAID 1 at the same time so i'll go look into that and first figure a way to separate my drive then i'll search for a driver for linux to "see" the RAID (0) (maybe i just need to partition it first)
and after that read about dual booting on RAIDs :)

There's no sign of GRUB straight to Ubuntu (tried esc and reinstalling from inside)

it's not loading anything thats the problems it's like it w8ts for something and after "It" time's out restarts X relogs and asks for pass and then the mouse and other usbs work fine (very strange behavior also there's an error msg while booting but i can't read it it skips too fast how do i stop it (at tty1) or ask the console to cat every error while booting? :)

No there's nothing like it with the live cd.

hi sdd,

i fighting for more then a month with the same problem. Got a 50 Gb Revo and did try nearly everything. Today i am going to do last tries.
First step was putting a gpt-partition-table on. I know - overdone but it was a try.
Not one Live-CD-DVD was able to recognize the the partitions at boot-time. (Gentoo,SysRescCD,Ubuntu,Slackware,Mint).
Grub dos not know gpt, grub2 can't handle dmraid, lilo - no gpt.
After booting those, the best i could get was a /dev/dm-0 and the /dev/mapper/control.
Those following steps brought the thing on :
1. dmraid -an (terminal)
2. dmraid -ay (terminal.)
3. start gparted (within X. Only that!! was able to create and initialize the /dev/dm-x and /dev/mapper/sil_...-nodes)
next steps because i did lvm2-volumes on one partition
4. vgscan -v
5. vgchange -ay -v
Then i was able to mount and install something.
After its possible to do something like :
mount --rbind /dev/mapper/sil_... /usr
and so on. But so many layers on top of each other and to much to do for syncing the lot. I don't use that in reality. It's asking for trouble.
But there was no way to get it booting directly. There needs to be a proper dmraid support before that will happen. Ah - Kernel was 2.6.28 and motherboard (problem might be different with others) MSI-DKA790GX.
Today the last try with the dmraid-way. I will put plain mbr-partitions on and see if this changes something.
If not, i install a mdadm software-raid. This will be save because the two channels of the revo are always recognized as /dev/sdx and /dev/sdy .
It is a shame and i am looking forward to see the difference in performance of that software-raid.
No way to find some solution in the internet. Nobody got it to run with dmraid - just mdadm does the job.
