retaining control of remote machine, updating kernel

apologies about all of my questions.

anyway, is there any way to maintain control of a machine remotely if lets say a kernel update didn't go so well and the machine couldnt reboot.

is there anyway to do a dual boot so that i can always maintain control of the good one? or is it possible to start up an ssh or telnet before going into the kernel? help!

if the machine can't reboot and you are not physically present, you are pretty much SOL. you won't even have ssh or remote access while the machine is booting, so if something goes wrong, again, you are out of luck.
