Resurrecting and ASUS Netbook with Linux

Linux Newbie (of sorts). In a bit of a bind. I currently only have an ASUS netbook with 1GB RAM. I recently installed Lubuntu 14.10 on it, but it runs so slow. It's original OS was XP which I changed to eeebuntu. I haven't used it in a long time, but my two other computers decided to die at the same time.

I'm looking for a Linux distro that will work quickly and efficiently on the ASUS. I have looked at a number of options (Lubuntu, Xbuntu, Puppy, et al, but there is so much conflicting information. I basically only need access to the Internet and something like Libre Office and Firefox or Chromium. Speed is the key. With Lubuntu 14.10 it takes a while for programs to open, and there are frequent crashes.

Any suggestions? Desperate for help as I am currently job hunting and need it to send out resumes.

Thanks in advance.

On a Atom (gateway) with only a Gig and a real harddisk (not SSD) I found Bodhi the best. Uses Enlightenment as a DE, so may be a slight learning curve. Based on Ubuntu, so plenty of packages available.

I managed to fit puppy Linux on my original 4Gb Asus EEEPC 701 with 1Gb ram. I don't really use it much now though.

Play Bonny!
