restoring system back
 

can i do a complete system restore on a toshiba netbook with linux op system, as ive bought one with admin name and password still on it, and i dont know the password to use the admin side of the netbook?, any idea's

You should really ask the original owner for the passwd.
Otherwise, do you have the install media?

If the system was offered by toshiba, they may offer a disk if you want to restore.

Might be it was left the default for that distro.

I am willing to guess that you could install almost any major distro you like though.

If you don't want to reinstall you should be able to reset the password to anything you like. The easiest way to do this depends on what linux distribution is installed on the machine. Can you tell us what it is?

Why don't you reinstall Linux?

Drop to the recovery mode or single user mode and change the password for root. Else use a live CD for it.

Thanks guys for the advice... but its no help to me. You see i've purchased the netbook from the store i work in, the netbook was sold last year and returned to the shop for a refund. The original owner , added their name to it, and password. No idea who this person is, and therefore cannot use a lot of the functions on the netbook without the password. I dont have any software apart from what the machine came pre-loaded with, and unlike most window based laptops etc, i cant seem to find a system restore back to factory settings anywhere using any of the F keys. Just wondered if someone out there in in infinite wisdom would know the answer im seeking. once again thankyou all for your help.

Just reinstall any distro you want.

i think there is something called ubuntu netbook remix which probably what he is running.

my idea would be to google it, download the iso, (you will probably need unetbootn to create a bootable usb harddrive) and install it.

In that case, get an install media (CD/DVD) of any distro you fancy (www.distrowatch.com) and re-install.
For safety I'd get the same distro as you've already got; at least to start with.
