Restoring SLES8 distro (initrd fails)
Hello,
I have a SLES8 SP3 system, for which I'm testing 'disaster recovery' via BackupExec. I've rebuilt partitions , restored boot sector and have the replacement system booting the kernel BUT the boot fails.
I am able to get into a grub prompt and check existence of kernel & initrd files. I am able to load the kernel and the initrd files manually. The problem arises after I boot, indicating the problem, is somewhere else, but where?
The problem may relate to the Backup and how the files have been restored but I'm uncertain how to prodeed. Ideas anyone?
config
160BG ATA disk, separate / and /boot partitions (+others).
IBM IntelliStation MPro (single processor, Intel) (512MB etc)
Original SLES8 system is SMP (dual opteron) ...
Anyway, I get the following from the console which may or may not shed some light on this!
console boot output
Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed
Unmounting old root
Trying to free ramdisk memory ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 184k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kenel panic: No init dound. Try passing init= option to kernel.
menu.lst

kernel (hd0,4)vmlinuz) root=/dev/hda5 vga=791
initrd (hd0,4)/initrd
Thanks,
andy.
