Restore Systems Defaults
 

I know I'm a newbie in Linuz and I don't spend enough time on the manuals but I hardly find what I'm lokking 4 ...

The thing is that I screwed (pardon my french) my SO.

The file associations have a mind of their own and can't be changed even as root.
For instance can't open real media files, mp3 files are associated with kaffeine but if I open another file it is opened in another instance and reports audio channel in use ...

You get the picture ...

What I wanted to know is if I can, as root, run something that restores the defaut associations of if I have to start from scrach and install mandriva for the 3rd time...
It's a hands on approach ... learn by doing ... or ask someone who knows what he is doing ...

If you use KDE :
Control panel -> KDE Components -> Files assosiations

In gnome i dont know

I did that.
Associations are not stored.
I changed association and check the "remember association" box.
I even tried changing the asociation as root.
Same result.

What file associations have you changed that you wish to change back?

You can do it with a file by file bases, by right clicking on the file you wish to open, click on "open with" then "other", and click the remember this association. It does do it per-user (so one user can set specific programs they woud liek to use).

That is what I've been telling.
The "remember association" doesn't work.
Always opens mp3 with "noatum" instead of "amarok"
And I find "noatum" kind of buggy on my system.
Same thing happens to "real media" files.
Always asks me what program to open file.
Even tried the association as root.
The system always gets to 1st choice. And it is not after reboot. If the next file is the same extention.
The system doesn't care if I ckecked "remember" or not.

Do you have the lastest KDE ?

MANDRIVA 2005 LE with KDE 3.3

KDE is up to 3.4

look into upgrading your software... sometimes I find that can be a gigantic help
