Resolution problem with OpenSUSE...
 

Hopefully there won't be too many threads out there about this already.

I just installed openSUSE 11.1, which is my first non-windows OS.

I can't seem to make use of my whole screen. I get about two centimetres of black at the left and right sides of my screen (can't put the mouse there, either), and also the resolution is quite low, forcing me to scroll a lot when I'm just browsing the internet and stuff. I'm sure this is easily fixed by changing some setting somewhere, but I have no idea of how to go about it.

I'm using the KDE 4.1 thingy for my desktop, and I'm on a 15.4" "Philips" laptop that is about a month old.

Hi Tobi. It's possible that when opensuse configured your monitor it picked the wrong resolution - I know that it did for me.

Go into Yast -> Hardware -> Graphics Card and Monitor. From there you'll be able to configure the type and capabilities of the monitor attached to your system as well as your resolution.

When I first installed OpenSUSE on my computer, I faced the same problem as you are facing right now.
As you mentioned, your monitor is Phillips 15", you need to know the maximum resolution supported by your monitor.

1. Go to YaST.
2. Select Graphic card and monitor
3. At Monito tab, select your monito from the drop down list if it is listed, or simply select the generic monitor.
4. At Resolution tab, select the maximum resolution supported by your monitor.
5. After applying the setting YaST will ask you to test the setting, select ok.
6. At test screen, make sure, the cursor is displayed at center of the screen, if not, then discard the changes and select other screen resolution. If it is displayed at the screen center, accept the setting.
7. Restart your computer.

This will solve your problem.
