resolution of 1280x1024 with i830M possible on external display?

I installed xorg and wanted to run the external display with 1280x1024 and the internal with 1024x768. But it doesn't work. I can only run the external display with that resolution, if I comment the internal in the xorg.conf. It is not the problem with running the displays with different res. in general, e.g. I can run the external with 1024x768 and the interal with 640x480. I just made an bios update and the kernel is 2.6.11. Xorg is 6.8.2.

Thank you for any suggestions!
