I'm using FC12 too. OK, please try the following:

1. Select "System" then "Preference" then "Display"
2. On item "Resolution", is 800x600 the maximum res?

checkout your display properties ....what is maximum display settings ?

your screen resolution depends on the size and capability of your monitor and the type of video card you have.

I might guess he was running 1024x768 before in maybe windows so the hardware is probably capable, my guess is that you have the wrong driver loaded for your hardware, maybe the vesa or svga driver, try making sure you are using the intel driver.
