Resizing the file system
 

Hi everybody .. :)
I had window system on the other side of the HDD before. Now it was down and I dont want to repair and use it anymore. I want to format it and resize the linux system. How do I do?:rolleyes: Reply me when you are free, please .
If I can get the step by step guide or doc , it would really be appreciated.

Just boot from a live CD and use gparted to grow your linux partition into the space that was used by windows. It takes time (maybe 30 mins, depending on the size of your disk) but works well.

Download the GParted LiveCD and burn it to a CD. Next boot from that CD. Delete the Windows partition and next resize the Linux partition to include the free space. Make sure to have a backup!

if the windows partition was before the linux partition, on the hdd,
then wiping the M$ out will lose your Grub boot loader.

you will have to re-install it or the linux O/S.

or you won't be able to boot from the hdd.

What distro of Linux do you have installed? To know which grub you are using, grub or grub2.

Once you delete the Windows partition, if it's the first one, then just as pierre2 said, you'll most likely be unable to boot.

To repair that you'll need a LiveCD to install grub again to the harddisk and let it detect installed operating systems. Since you'd only need Grub to make your system available again, you could also download SuperGrub and boot from that and let it fix the boot of Gnu/Linux.

I have been using fedora10.

I do not think this is correct - grub should be on the MBR which is not part of any partition.

So just go ahead and use a live cd to delete the windows partition, and then resize the linux one.

As always, if you are not sure what you are doing, it's best to have a backup of your personal files.

Human errors are easy to make, but I have found gparted tp be 100% reliable.

Also correct. If grub is installed on the MBR. OP doesn't know where it's installed and it's dangerous to assume it is on the MBR. If it is, all for the better, if it's not he'll need a LiveCD or the SuperGrub cd to reinstall Grub and have it detect the installed OS.
