I have resized a second partition on my second hard drive. The first partition has knoppix installed on it. How do I assign root partition to this new partition using gparted please

"How do I assign root partition" - what are you trying to do?
Do you want to boot it? Do you want it to be where "/" is mounted?

I gather that you want to use the new partition for your Knoppix installation, right? If so, it can be done fairly easy (I did it with a Debian installation a year ago or so). I think I just copied the works using cp (make sure you keep all ownership and permissions), edited the etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst to point to the right partition and then made sure the MBR pointed to the right partition.

I am trying to install a second distro on my sedond hard drive.I have resized the hard drive using gparted. Upon installation I get the message that there is no root partition installed and can go further.I want to dual boot with the existing knoppix distro. Thanks for all your suggestions

Then just go ahead and install it on that partition. I don't know what distro you'll want to install but if it's a polished and mature distro I guess that the installation procedure will dump you into some form of partition manager, where you decide what partition or partitions to use, what file systems and where to mount it/them. Just point out the new partition and choose it to be formated with a file system (ext3 is a good bet), mounted on / and off you go. At the end of the installation process you'll probably get a question about grub and booting. Again, this varies between distros but if it's a polished and mature distro so I'd be surprised if it doesn't autodetect Knoppix and ask you if you want the grub boot menu to contain both distro and to write it to the MBR.

What is the other distro? Do you have any other OS on the computer?
