I just installed Open Media Vault which runs as a thin Debian distro that fits easily on a CD. Just google it to find their web site. Explaining Computers youtube channel has a nice video explaining how to set it up on a Rock64. I used an old single core amd64 compaq tower I got for free at the transfer station. Just added a few SATA disks.
Easy install supporting nfs and SMB/CIFS as well as many others. Easiest setup for Samba I ever did. Got Vista, XP, Win7 and Win10 using it as windows share without reading manual. You can setup individual disks as separate shares or as large share with LVM.
I always thought a server had to be a big powerful machine, rackmount stuff and the like. I have come to love small servers though. Any computer can be a server.
My own personal server is a little 25w tdp amd kabini quad core. Hits 50% when wife and I are playing minecraft, but otherwise runs great. Serves my media across the house to pxe booted machines that direct boot kodi. It also doubles as the media center on the living room tv. Storage provided by usb 3.0 drives. Works wonderfully.
I like hearing stories like this, where people take something that people say is simply not a server, and use it as such. Lot to be said for low powered or repurposed hardware. Only one downside to hardware like you used. The electric usage is up sky high for a machine that should be running 24/7
