Replacing Xndros

Hi,

I have recently been given an EeePC 4G netbook which is running Xandros, I haven't been using Linux for very long so this question might appear very elementary to all the Linux experts.

My question is this:

I don't like the version of Linux (Xandros) that is supplied with the netbook and would like to replace it with something else. However it only has a 4 GB hard drive so I would like to know what distro would fit on the drive and also leave room for saving data. I had thought of Eeebuntu basic but it seems a bit too basic. I have tried Eebuntu NBR by booting the netbook with a USB memory stick/thumb drive but the mouse doesn't work properly - it is very erratic. The distros that I have tried on my desktop, and like, are Ubuntu and Mint

Ideally, I would like Linux Mint but am afraid that it will be too big or may not run properly.

Also, I haven't (at the moment) got an external optical drive and would like to know if installing whatever I decide upon by means of a Unetbootin installation would be the same as installing it from a CD. I ask this because the Eeebuntu version on my USB memory stick which I made on a Windows machine using Unetbootin seems to have Windows files on it

Would some kind soul advise me please?

Debian with lxde or perhaps xfce would be the way to go.
My install on my 701 4gb with lxde only takes up 1.6gb and boots to lxde in 20 seconds.
