Replace 3rd OS without installing new Grub bootloader
Hello all. I hope I have posted in the correct forum. I have a triple boot setup with Windows 7, Backtrack5 R2 and Knoppix. While Knoppix has, for the most part, been a swell distro, it's also a security hole in my machine due to the lack of any login screen or password requirements. I want to replace Knoppix with Debian 6.0.5.
My problem is that I'm not sure how to install Debian without Installing Grub that comes with it, then edit the BT5 grub menu to reflect the new OS list after the Debian install.
Does anyone have an idea as to how to go about this?

Bt5 is debian based you should be able to do & automatically detect debian.

BT5 is Ubuntu based, not Debian based.
To answer the OP's question: Just download a Debian installer CD (not a Live-CD) and during boot choose the expert install option. This way you should be asked if you want to install a bootloader.
After installation boot into Backtrack and launch , which, as EDDY1 stated already, will add debian to the boot menu.

Hmmm. The terminal is telling me that Grub is not installed nor is the 'update' command....
and return the following messages;
Quote:
sudo update grub
sudo: update: command not found
|
and
Code:
grub
The program 'grub' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt-get install grub
The bootloader does say 'Grub'.....What is going on here?

Open a new thread for your wireless issue, I am sure that there is a solution.
