repair console

i am having redhat linux se 4.0 installed on p4 system . I was using it since one month , intermetently it was having a problem of hard disk detection.
now it is detecting hard disk but linux is directly going in repair mode.
what commands i can use to check my hard disk , file system , and how i can repair this.
i had tried with e2fsck , but in vain.
can any one tell me?

That depends on, what filesystem your partitions have.
