rename file with "mv" not working for folder?

Dear all,

I tried to rename a folder but it didn't work. To rename a folder x to y I did the following:

mv x y

But it didn't work, instead it moved the whole folder x into folder y.

What is the correct way to rename a folder?

thanks a lot for helping!

You have to make sure the destination directory does not yet exist.
